Shalma's thanking letter to ECHO Shalma* is a 13 year old girl from Kadur in Tq. Hirekerur district. Her parents are very poor and earn their living as coolie workers. One day Shalma went to her auntie’s house where she stole Rs. 20 to buy some biscuits. Her family found out and Shalma was afraid of her grandmother's reaction. Therefore she ran away, hopped on a bus and unluckily landed up 400 km further in Bangalore. In the city she was taken from the bus station by police and brought to the Child Welfare Committee in Children’s Home. There our social worker met Shalma. Immediately a letter was sent to the headmaster of Kadur school saying that the girl was
in Bangalore. The headmaster, a teacher and the grandmother arrived within a week at ECHO. Together we went to Children’s Home where Shalma was released. Although grandmother spent her Rs. 6000 savings for an eye-operation on searching the girl she was grateful to be reunited with her granddaughter. Later ECHO received a thanking letter (above) from Shalma, her family and the headmaster.

Raja* was just 16 when both his parents died and he came to live with his sister and brother in law. Their family situation was very poor. There was no money for Raja to go to school; therefore he worked as a carpenter to earn money. This money was mostly spent on liquor by his brother in law. When his brother in law was drunk, he became very abusive, beating his wife and her brother. The family was terrorized for years. One day during a fight after his brother in law had too much to drink, Raja attacked him and killed him. The boy was arrested and taken to Observation Home. ECHO took up his case and provided legal aid during his trail. After his release Raja could not return to his family, therefore he came to live in ECHO's Transitional Home, where he gets basic education and counseling. Raja is very keen to work as a carpenter again after his transitional period.
