ECHO's Center for Juvenile Justice stands up for juvenile rights and specifically aims at implementing the Juvenile Justice Act 2000. This Act consolidates the laws relating to children in difficult circumstances by providing care and protection. ECHO implements the Act by:
  • making case studies and providing legal aid to children in the government Observation Home (children in conflict with law) and Children's Home (children in need of care protection).
  • undertaking legal proceedings for the transition of children to ECHO's Transitional Home, a recognized "Fit Institution" under the Act.
  • giving orientation training to the stakeholder of JJA 2000 on the Act and its implementation.
ECHO gives orientation on Special Juvenile Police Unit
  • training and assisting Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU). The SJPU is a police unit, provisioned for under JJA 2000, specially trained in handling children in a child friendly manner and it may be assisted by recognized NGO's.
  • monitoring the juvenile justice system together with the State and other stakeholders of the Act through the Karnataka Juvenile Justice Forum (KJJF).
